BENEFITS OF FUTONS
A futon as we understand it in ‘western culture’ is a flat mattress made of fabric and filled with either cotton, wool or a synthetic middle that sits on a wood or metal frame for multiple usage as a bed, chair and/or couch.
This type of futon is based upon the Japanese bed that usually folds up and is stored away during the day, something that is essential considering the lack of space in Japan.
While in Canada we don’t have quite the demand for our space it is still useful to own one or more so you have options in your home for guests staying, friends in from out of town, childrens sleepovers, demanding pets or even a restful weekend afternoon nap.
Futons are comfortable, easy to move around and can be fit into small spaces on the floor or look smart with a nice wood frame without the price tag that comes with a lounge suite.
Cheap futon mattresses have given the term futon a bit of a bad name over the years however there are very good quality futon mattresses available that are as comfortable as your bed and or lounge.
The options to choose from include cotton, foam, polyester and innerspring or a combination of those. An innerspring mattress may be heavier and slightly higher in price but should give you more support - make sure you talk to a bedding and mattress expert before you decide which futon mattress to buy.
You can purchase a futon mattress that does not require it’s own cover however futon covers are available or simply fit them with a double or queen sized bed sheet.
The futon covers can be machine washed however if you don’t use one or it isn’t removable you can clean with a sponge and some dishwashing liquid with warm water. Also vacuuming and using a lint roller is encouraged as is turning the mattress over at various times each year to stop one side from wearing out more than the other.
